Portuguese is the 6th most spoken language in the world (as a first language).
The number of native speakers is around 300 million, with the majority in Brazil (around 200 million). Portugal has 10.5 million inhabitants and a further 20 million Portuguese living world-wide.
One of the little-known facts about the Portuguese language is that it is strongly influenced by Arabic. The Moors ruled Spain and Portugal from 700 to 1500 CE, and this affected the language. Many Arabic-derived words start with “al”, such as Algarve (al = the, garve = west).
